The story centers on Ray Garraty, Walker #47, who begins the long trek with a mixture of hope for the grand prize and deep-seated fear. The participants are closely monitored by armed soldiers; if a walker drops below the required pace or stops for more than a few seconds, they receive a warning. After three warnings, they are executed on the spot. As the hours and miles pass, the extreme physical competition and mental strain begin to wear down the walkers. Ray and a few other participants, such as Peter McVries and Stebbins, form intense friendships, finding solace in conversation and camaraderie amidst the shared suffering.
As the number of participants dwindles drastically due to exhaustion, injury, and brutal executions, the film's focus shifts from competition to a stark struggle for survival and a dark allegory of power and despair. The remaining walkers must battle sleep deprivation, unbearable pain, and the grim reality that all but one of them is destined to die. The ultimate winner, who will receive untold riches and one granted wish from the state, must sacrifice everything he has, including his humanity, in the cruelest test of endurance imaginable.
