centers on Anna and Aleks, a young couple and avid collectors of rare and obscure folk songs across rural Ireland. They search for near-extinct ballads to record and sell to mysterious buyers at high prices. In their quest for this forbidden knowledge, they hear rumors of an extremely ancient song—a ballad said to be a thousand years old, passed down orally only from mother to daughter and never written. This song is believed to contain a form of living modern alchemy or ancient magic.
Their search eventually leads them to Rita Concannon, a mysterious elderly woman who is reluctant to share the song. Through manipulation and slight deceit, Anna and Aleks manage to convince Rita to sing the ballad for them to record. The song tells a story of love turning into a curse—a narrative in Old Irish that predates the modern language. However, the act of recording and documenting this sacred, taboo song is a profound transgression. Soon after the song is shared, a series of bizarre and terrifying events begin to plague the couple, starting with Rita's sudden death and eerie discoveries surrounding it.
As the couple descends into madness and supernatural horror, the ancient song they stole unleashes a hidden, primordial evil force, which manifests itself in the form of grotesque entities and mind-altering experiences. Anna and Aleks must fight for their survival against the otherworldly entities they have awakened, while confronting the moral and physical consequences of their attempt to commodify a cultural heritage that was meant to remain concealed.
